The Craft Mat publishes calculators and reference charts for quilting, crochet, knitting and needlepoint. Every page states its method, is checked against examples worked out by hand, and shows the date it was last reviewed. This page explains who makes the pages and the rules they follow.
Who writes and checks the pages
The site is run by one person, Khokhar Sab, a developer in Kashmir. When a page says "we", it means Khokhar Sab. Khokhar Sab doesn't quilt, knit or crochet, so the pages never describe personal craft experience. They explain the arithmetic, cite the standards it rests on, and leave the craft judgment to you.
What we publish
- Calculators that turn your measurements into stitch counts, yardage and plans.
- Reference charts built from published standards, presented in our own tables.
- Explanations of how each calculation works, with a worked example you can follow on paper.
A page goes live only when it is finished. There are no "coming soon" pages, and no pages written just to target a search phrase without a tool or table behind it.
How a page is made
- Find the standard or common practice the math depends on, such as the Craft Yarn Council's yarn weight system or the usable width of quilting cotton.
- Write the formula in a separate module and test it against cases worked out by hand, including very small, very large and metric inputs.
- Write the page: what the tool does, the formula, a worked example, and an "Assumptions and sources" box listing what the math takes for granted.
- Check the page on a phone and a desktop screen, then publish it with its review date.
The full list of sources and the test count for each calculator are on how we calculate.
What we don't do
- Show finished projects as our own work, or write as if we made something we didn't.
- Publish ratings, reviews or testimonials we didn't receive.
- Let advertisers, shops or affiliate programs change what a calculator tells you to buy. How the site earns money is on the disclosure page.
- Copy other sites' tables or text. Where a standard is public, we present its figures in our own layout and name the source.
Photos and checks before publishing
The photos of yarn, fabric and tools are illustrations of materials only. They never show a finished project presented as someone's real work. Photos of real finished projects are shared by the makers who made them, with their written permission, and the caption names them. Nothing goes live unchecked: every formula has to pass its hand-checked test cases, and Khokhar Sab reviews each page before it is published.
Updates and corrections
Each calculator shows an "Updated" date under its title. A page is reviewed again when a reader reports a problem, when a standard it relies on changes, or when a feature is added, and the date changes only when the page has actually been reviewed.
If you find a mistake, please tell us. Confirmed errors are fixed and logged with the date on how we calculate, so you can see what changed.
