  • Medium / worsted (4) yarn, about 134 to 178 yd (a rough range; see the note below).
  • Crochet hook 5.5 to 6.5 mm (US I-9 to K-10½), or the size that gives you the gauge.
  • Stitch marker, scissors and a tapestry needle.

Gauge

12 dc and 7 rounds = 4 inches (10 cm). Measure a flat swatch before you start; if your gauge differs, enter yours above and the pattern updates.

Abbreviations (US terms)

ch chain, sl st slip stitch, st(s) stitch(es), dc double crochet, fpdc front post double crochet, bpdc back post double crochet.

Instructions

Work in joined rounds with the right side facing. The starting chain never counts as a stitch. Place a marker in the first stitch of each round.

  1. Round 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), work 12 dc into the ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a sl st to the first dc (12 sts).
  2. Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first dc (24 sts).
  3. Round 3: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st; repeat from * 12 times in all. Join with a sl st to the first dc (36 sts).
  4. Round 4: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts; repeat from * 12 times in all. Join with a sl st to the first dc (48 sts).
  5. Round 5: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). *2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts; repeat from * 12 times in all. Join with a sl st to the first dc (60 sts).
  6. Rounds 6 to 13: Ch 2, 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first dc (60 sts). The hat should now measure about 7.5" from the center of the crown; add or skip a round to match.
  7. Rounds 14 to 16 (brim): Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), *fpdc around the next st, bpdc around the next st; repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first fpdc. Keep working fpdc over fpdc and bpdc over bpdc so the ribs line up (60 sts).
  8. Finishing: Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch tail. Weave in the ends with a tapestry needle. Add a pom-pom if you like.
Fit check

Before you stop increasing, lay the crown flat. It should measure about 6.4" across (the hat circumference divided by π). If it's smaller, add an increase round; if it's bigger, take one out.

The yarn range uses rough yards per square inch for medium / worsted (4) crochet fabric plus 15 percent. Buy an extra ball, or weigh a swatch for a closer number with the hat size calculator.

Pick a size, your yarn weight and your gauge, and get a free crochet beanie pattern written round by round. The default makes an adult medium beanie in double crochet: 5 crown rounds to 60 stitches, then straight rounds and a ribbed brim, 16 rounds in all.

How to use the crochet beanie pattern generator

  1. Choose who the beanie is for. Under More options you can type an exact head measurement and height instead.
  2. Pick a fit and whether you want a ribbed brim.
  3. Choose your yarn weight and main stitch. Then crochet a small flat swatch and enter how many stitches and rounds fit in 4 inches.
  4. Read the pattern below the form, or copy it, print it or save it as a PDF.
  5. Work the crown, then check its width before you stop increasing. The pattern tells you the width to aim for.

What makes this free crochet hat pattern different

A printed hat pattern is written for the designer's yarn and gauge. If your stitches come out bigger or smaller, the hat does too. This generator starts from your own gauge and head size, so the stitch counts are worked out for your hat. Each number comes from the same tested math as our crochet hat size calculator.

The trade-off is design. A generated pattern is a plain, sturdy beanie with a ribbed brim. For textured stitches, stripes or a folded brim, a designer's pattern gives you more. Once you know your numbers here, you can also resize a designer's pattern with them.

Crochet beanie pattern sizes at a glance

Here is what the generator writes for each size in double crochet at 12 stitches and 7 rounds per 4 inches, standard fit, with a 1.5 inch ribbed brim. Your gauge will change these numbers, so enter it above.

Notice that some neighboring sizes land on the same stitch count. In double crochet each crown round adds 12 stitches, which is 4 inches of hat at this gauge. When the closest round is too far from your size, switch to half double or single crochet for finer steps.

Single, half double or double crochet?

The same adult medium beanie, at each stitch's example worsted gauge and with no brim, comes out like this.

Adult medium beanie in single, half double and double crochet

single crochet68436
half double crochet87223
double crochet126016

Double crochet is the quickest, with the fewest rounds. Single crochet takes the most rounds but makes a dense, wind-resistant hat. Half double sits in between. Oombawka Design's free beanie uses half double at 3 stitches per inch, which matches 12 per 4 inches.

Reading the pattern

The pattern is written in US terms and joined rounds. "Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch)" means the chain only lifts your hook to the right height. Your first stitch then goes into the first stitch of the round. "*2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts; repeat from * 12 times" means work that sequence 12 times around. Our guides on reading a crochet pattern and crocheting in the round explain these in more detail.

Getting the fit right

A fitted beanie is made a little smaller than the head so it stretches to stay on. Joy of Motion Crochet suggests about 1 inch less than the head. The standard fit here takes off 6 percent, which is 1.3 inches on a 22 inch head. Choose snug for very stretchy yarn and relaxed for a hat you plan to line.

Measure the head when you can. The Craft Yarn Council head circumference chart is a good fallback for gifts. Our crochet hat sizing guide covers ease and crown math in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

How many stitches do I start a crochet beanie with?

A common rule is 6 stitches in the magic ring for single crochet, 8 for half double crochet and 12 for double crochet. Each increase round then adds that same number, which keeps the crown flat. The generator uses these starts and tells you when to stop increasing for your size.

How do I know when to stop increasing?

Lay the crown flat and measure across. It should be the hat circumference divided by π. For the adult medium example (20 inches around), that's about 6.4 inches. The pattern lists the last increase round, and the fit check below the pattern gives the width for your hat.

Can I make the beanie in single crochet or half double?

Yes. Pick the stitch under "Main stitch" and the pattern switches to it. It also fills in a worsted starting gauge for that stitch. Shorter stitches make a denser, warmer fabric and take more rounds to reach the same height.

Is this pattern in US or UK crochet terms?

US terms. In UK terms, US single crochet is double crochet, half double is half treble and double crochet is treble. Our crochet abbreviations guide lists both.

How much yarn do I need for a crochet beanie?

The adult medium example in worsted yarn needs roughly 134 to 178 yards. Oombawka Design says less than one ball covers every size of its worsted beanie. The generator shows a range for your size and yarn weight; buy a little extra if your yarn is a different fiber or you add a pom-pom.
